A Mother’s love is something that no one can explain,
It is made of deep devotion and of sacrifice and pain,
It is endless and unselfish and enduring come what may
For nothing can destroy it or take that love away
If I were hanged on the highest hill,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!
I know whose love would follow me still,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!
To-day’s your natal day; Sweet flowers I bring:
Mother, accept, I pray My offering.
And may you happy live, And long us bless;
Receiving as you give Great happiness.
Children, I come back today
To tell you a story of the long dark way
That I had to climb, that I had to know
In order that the race might live and grow.
Look at my face—dark as the night—
Yet shining like the sun with love’s true light.
Hundreds of stars in the pretty sky,
Hundreds of shells on the shore together,
Hundreds of birds that go singing by,
Hundreds of lambs in the sunny weather.
Hundreds of dewdrops to greet the dawn,
Hundreds of bees in the purple clover,
Hundreds of butterflies on the lawn,
But only one mother the wide world over.
She’s somewhere in the sunlight strong,
Her tears are in the falling rain,
She calls me in the wind’s soft song,
And with the flowers, she comes again.
All love begins and ends there, we are taught;
And in the touch of lips that reverenced
The breasts their baby lips once pressed, is brought
The consummation of life’s dearest dream.
A picture memory brings to me;
I look across the years and see
Myself beside my mother’s knee.
I feel her gentle hand restrain
My selfish moods, and know again
A child’s blind sense of wrong and pain.
The bravest battle that ever was fought!
Shall I tell you where and when?
On the maps of the world you will find it not; ‘
Twas fought by the mothers of men.
Yes, thou art ever present, Power divine;
Not circumscribed by time, nor fixed by space,
Constrained by no partition, art, not thine,
Now larger or now smaller, to embrace
The vast creation, but diffused throughout,
All, and in all, thy being still extends,
Awful in unity, so as none can doubt
But where the whole, there also are the parts.
