Nutrition & Health

Nutrition is about eating a healthy, balanced diet. Food and drink provide the energy and nutrients you need to stay healthy. Understanding these nutritional needs makes it easier to make good food choices.

Nutrition is the study of the nutrients in food, how the body uses them, and the relationship between nutrition, health, and disease. Nutritionists use ideas from molecular biology, biochemistry, and genetics to understand how nutrition affects the human body.

Nutrition is an important part of health and development. Better nutrition is associated with a better infant, child and maternal health, stronger immune systems, safer pregnancy and childbirth, lower risk of non-communicable diseases (such as diabetes and heart disease), and longer life.

Healthy children learn better. Well-nourished people are creative and can create opportunities to slowly break the cycles of poverty and hunger.

The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Agriculture (USDA) work together to update and publish the Dietary Guidelines every five years. Each edition of the Healthy Eating Guidelines reflects the current state of nutrition science.
